CLEAN

Large-Scale CO2-Enhanced Gas Recovery in the Altmark Natural Gas Field

Duration

July 1, 2008 – June 30, 2011

Description

The BMBF collaborative project CLEAN (CO2 Largescale EGR in the Altmark Natural Gas Field) is a scientific support program for a CO2-injection-based “Enhanced Gas Recovery” (EGR) project in Europe’s second-largest natural gas field. The research focuses on a comprehensive geoscientific characterization of the entire geological system, including the reservoir rocks, fluids, and overburden, as well as the physicochemical processes occurring during CO2 injection and migration. To plan and implement the CO2 pilot test in the Altmark natural gas field, a geomodel that is as realistic and process-relevant as possible is being developed. The site-specific rock physical data required for constructing the geomodel are experimentally determined in the rock physics laboratories of the ITE. In this process, the core material is examined depending on the lithofacies type and the potential interaction between the CO2 and the reservoir rock. The simulation study is intended to provide insights into the actual mixing conditions, the effective CO2 permeabilities, and the EGR capacity. A field-wide simulation study will be used to address the critical question of whether it is possible to dispose of the CO2 emissions from a large power plant in an environmentally friendly manner.
