The Institute of Subsurface Energy Systems is managed by a board of directors, represented by the two full time professors. The department structure was introduced in 1983. Since then the ITE has two autonomous departments:
- Drilling and Production
- Reservoir Engineering
- Petroleum Production Systems
Joint administration, i. e. library, student advise, accounting, are conducted by permanent staff.
Outstanding German representatives from the Oil & Gas Industry are advising the institute through an Advisory Committee regarding qualifications of graduates, lectures from industry, industry internship research demands and institute management.
