DGMK/KIT Short Course: Applied Clastic Diagenesis 2023
Geo-Energy Systems and Subsurface Technologies, October 4–6, 2023, Karlsruhe
About the Course
Reservoir quality in clastic lithologies is determined by rock composition and diagenesis, which control the development of porosity, pore surfaces, and pore connectivity. This short course provides an overview of applied clastic diagenesis and its influence on reservoir quality in sandstones, as it relates to the exploration, production, and storage of fluids and gases in the subsurface (O&G, geothermal, CCUS, H2 storage). The course is designed for students, PhD students, and professionals in geoscience-related fields who wish to learn about the fundamentals of clastic diagenesis in relation to reservoir quality and includes practical exercises using a microscope.
Course Objectives
- Learn about the commonly used tools and workflows in clastic diagenesis
- Learn to identify the main detrital and diagenetic components using light microscopy
- Develop an understanding of realistic diagenetic processes, their relative and absolute timing, and their effect on reservoir properties (n-value, Sw, petrophysics, formation damage)
- Assess differences in reservoir quality and their causes
- Learn to use physical and chemical principles to distinguish diagenesis myths from realistic diagenetic processes in order to build data-driven diagenesis models.
