Internship for Master's students

Objectives:

6-month internship focused on evaluating and benchmarking the results of the joint development project GELECO2. The project aims to develop controller software for coupling the reservoir simulator CMG GEM and the transient wellbore flow simulator KDI Ledaflow to enable integrated modeling of the wellbore-reservoir system in the context of CO2 injection (CCS). In addition, the functionality of the two simulators will be adjusted and extended to better handle complex CO2 thermodynamics. Depending on performance, the internship may be extended into a master’s thesis.

Tasks and deliverables:

  • Evaluate the performance and accuracy of the developments through conceptual modeling.
  • The evaluation focuses on CO2 injection scenarios with transient characteristics:
    • injection start-up and shut-in,
    • CO₂ phase transition and multiphase flow in the wellbore and reservoir, especially during CO₂ injection into pressure-depleted geological formations
    • etc.
  • Evaluate simulator capabilities in terms of modeling the thermodynamic behavior of pure and impure CO2 for PT and PH flash formulations.
  • Benchmarking of the results against published data and other simulators (OLGA, T2WELL).

Requirements:

  • Expertise in numerical reservoir and wellbore flow modeling
  • Expertise in PVT modeling, fluid thermodynamics, and mechanics
  • Coding skills are beneficial but not required
  • Basic experience working with CMG GEM or any other product from the CMG family is a plus
