Biography
- Born July 12, 1925, in Göttingen
- Attended school in Celle
- After turning 18 in 1943, served two years as a soldier in the war (as a tank gunner in Normandy and, finally, spent three months as a prisoner of the Americans)
- Studied mining engineering at the Clausthal University of Mining and Technology; graduated in 1950
- Subsequently worked as a deposit engineer and later as plant manager—today one would say district manager—at the Brigitta mining company in Steimbke near Nienburg/Weser
- Married Monika Gallasch in 1955; two sons
- Employed by the Royal/Dutch Shell Group since 1956
- Initially spent one year as a production engineer in The Hague
- Then six years with Shell Indonesia, about half of which as Senior Production Engineer and half as Exploration and Production Manager
- Then three years as Chief Petroleum Engineer at Shell/BP Petroleum Development Co. in Nigeria
- Subsequently Director of the Shell/Esso Study Group for Natural Gas Issues in Frankfurt am Main
- Since 1966, Member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Shell AG, Hamburg
- Responsibilities: Exploration and production in Germany and abroad
