TU Clausthal Hosts International Conference EMSF 2026

Clausthal University of Technology will host the 21st European Meeting on Supercritical Fluids (EMSF). From June 14–17, 2026, leading researchers and professionals from chemistry, physics, engineering, life sciences, and related fields will gather in Clausthal to discuss the role of supercritical fluids in shaping a sustainable future.

EMSF 2026 will combine excellent scientific presentations with an exhibition of the latest innovations and plenty of opportunities for personal exchange. For us, the meeting is more than a conference. It is a platform to connect fundamental research with practical applications for sustainable processes.

The event will take place in TU Clausthal’s historic Aula Academica, in the heart of the Harz Mountains, a World Heritage region with a long mining tradition that today stands for forward-looking energy research.

TU Clausthal Student Wins 1st Place in SPE Europe Student Paper Contest

We are proud to announce that Malek Saleh, a master’s student in the Petroleum Engineering program at TU Clausthal, has achieved 1st place in the 2025 Europe Student Paper Contest of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) in the master’s category. The competition, held during the SPE Europe Energy Conference in Vienna from June 10^th to 12^th, 2025, recognizes outstanding student research in petroleum and energy-related fields across Europe. Malek delivered a presentation entitled:

“Wettability of Caprocks at Geological Storage Conditions and their Interaction with Supercritical Carbon Dioxide.” His work provides valuable insights into subsurface storage processes and supports the development of safe and effective carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies.

As a result of this achievement, Malek will represent SPE Europe in the global finals of his category at the SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE), taking place in Houston, Texas, in October 2025 with approx.…

Georg-Hunaeus-Preis 2025 für Dr. Sebastian Hogeweg

Wir freuen uns, bekannt zu geben, dass Dr. Sebastian Hogeweg, ehemaliger Doktorand am Institute of Subsurface Energy Systems der TU Clausthal, mit dem renommierten Georg-Hunaeus-Preis 2025 ausgezeichnet wurde. Die Deutsche Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft für nachhaltige Energieträger, Mobilität und Kohlenstoffkreisläufe (DGMK) vergibt diesen Preis jährlich an herausragende Nachwuchswissenschaftler im Upstream-Bereich und würdigt damit die außergewöhnlichen Leistungen von Dr. Hogeweg in seiner Dissertation.

Dr. Hogeweg ist bereits der dritte Doktorand unseres Instituts, der diese Auszeichnung in den letzten zehn Jahren erhält. Seine Dissertation mit dem Titel „Numerical Investigations of Reactive Transport Processes during the Storage of Hydrogen in the Porous Subsurface“ verteidigte er im März 2024 mit summa cum laude. EU Projekt erfolgreich abgeschlossen

Das von der europäischen Kommission geförderte Forschungsprojekt „Hydrogen Underground storage in Porous Reservoirs“ (kurz: HyUSPRe) konnte zum 30. Juni 2024 erfolgreich abgeschlossen werden. In diesem Projekt hat das ITE zusammen mit sechs weiteren Forschungspartnern und zehn Industriepartnern (insbesondere Gasspeicherbetreiber) die Durchführbarkeit und das Potenzial einer groß angelegten Speicherung von erneuerbarem Wasserstoff in porösen Reservoiren (Gasfelder, Aquifere) in Europa untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigten, dass im Jahr 2050 Speicherkapazitäten in der Größenordnung von 80-270 TWh erforderlich sein werden, zwei Drittel davon in porösen Reservoiren. Aus den Ergebnissen dieser Forschung schloss das HyUSPRe-Konsortium, dass es keine „Showstopper“ für die Umsetzung gibt und die Ergebnisse daher als ermutigend angesehen werden können.

Project Kick off Meeting – Bilbao (ES), 23-24 of September 2024

The DESSERT project has started on 01 Jul 2024 and it has received funding from the European Union’s Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) programme under the GA No. 101157797. DESSERT, which stands for Advanced thread connected production string for hydrogen storage in underground formations, held its official Kick-off Meeting in Bilbao on 23 and 24 of September 2024. TUBACEX INNOVACIÓN, as the Project Coordinator, welcomed all partners in their headquarters to discuss the project's objectives and plans.
The primary focus of this 36-month project is the development of a new stainless steel prototype pipe designed for injecting and withdrawing hydrogen from underground reservoirs. This innovative technology aims to establish hydrogen as a readily available and sustainable energy source, positioning it as a crucial component in the global transition to cleaner energy solutions.
