CLEAN

CO2 Large-Scale Enhanced Gas Recovery in the Altmark Natural Gas Field

Duration

01.07.2008 - 30.06.2011

Description

The BMBF joint project CLEAN (CO2 Largescale EGR in the Altmark Natural Gas Field) was a scientific program accompanying an injection of CO2-based Enhanced Gas Recovery (EGR) projects in Europe's second largest gas field. The research focused on a comprehensive geoscientific analyses, characterization and physiochemical processes of the entire geological system (reservoir rock, fluids and cap rock) that occur during the injection and propagation of CO2. The preparation and implementation required state-of-the-art process relevant geomodels for the CO2 pilot test in the Altmark gas reservoir. In order to establish a realistic geomodel, site-specific rock data is required and was determined at the ITE rock laboratory. Thereby the reservoir core material was investigated in relation to their lithology and their potential interaction with CO2. The simulation study gave some indication of real gas mixing ratios, effective CO2 permeability as well as EGR capacities. A field-wide simulation study was used to identify if it is possible to store CO2 emissions from nearby facilities in an environmentally friendly manner.
