Welcome to our page of the Institute of Subsurface Energy Systems

Our institute is represented by three departments – Reservoir Engineering, Drilling and Production and Petroleum Production Systems. These are covering almost total amount of the education for the Bachelor and Master course Petroleum Engineering. Together with the oil and gas industry in Germany the institute is involved in essential projects of these areas of Research. On our website we will present you actual news and developments. TU Clausthal Hosts International Conference EMSF 2026

Clausthal University of Technology will host the 21st European Meeting on Supercritical Fluids (EMSF). From June 14–17, 2026, leading researchers and professionals from chemistry, physics, engineering, life sciences, and related fields will gather in Clausthal to discuss the role of supercritical fluids in shaping a sustainable future.

EMSF 2026 will combine excellent scientific presentations with an exhibition of the latest innovations and plenty of opportunities for personal exchange. For us, the meeting is more than a conference. It is a platform to connect fundamental research with practical applications for sustainable processes.

The event will take place in TU Clausthal’s historic Aula Academica, in the heart of the Harz Mountains, a World Heritage region with a long mining tradition that today stands for forward-looking energy research.

Student Award Winners 2025: Yousra El Bouhlali and Leonel Sebastião Machava

We are pleased to publish the second edition of the SPE Germany Newsletter 2025, bringing you the latest insights, achievements, and innovations from across our community. In this issue, we proudly celebrate: Yousra El Bouhlali (TU Clausthal) and Leonel Sebastião Marchava (TU Freiberg), recipients of the 2025 GSSPE Student Award for their outstanding contributions to geothermal education and hydrogen storage research. The TU Clausthal SPE Student Chapter, honored with its first-ever Presidential Award for Outstanding Student Chapter. We also present three technical reports:

TU Clausthal Student Wins 1st Place in SPE Europe Student Paper Contest

We are proud to announce that Malek Saleh, a master’s student in the Petroleum Engineering program at TU Clausthal, has achieved 1st place in the 2025 Europe Student Paper Contest of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) in the master’s category. The competition, held during the SPE Europe Energy Conference in Vienna from June 10th to 12th, 2025, recognizes outstanding student research in petroleum and energy-related fields across Europe. Malek delivered a presentation entitled:

“Wettability of Caprocks at Geological Storage Conditions and their Interaction with Supercritical Carbon Dioxide.” His work provides valuable insights into subsurface storage processes and supports the development of safe and effective carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies.

As a result of this achievement, Malek will represent SPE Europe in the global finals of his category at the SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE), taking place in Houston, Texas, in October 2025 with approx.…

Georg-Hunaeus Award 2025 for Dr. Sebastian Hogeweg

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Sebastian Hogeweg, former doctoral researcher at the Institute of Subsurface Energy Systems at Clausthal University of Technology, has been awarded the prestigious Georg-Hunaeus Award 2025. This award is presented annually by the German Society for Sustainable Energy Carriers, Mobility and Carbon Cycles (DGMK) to outstanding early-career scientists in the upstream sector, recognizing Dr. Hogeweg’s exceptional achievements in his doctoral research.

Dr. Hogeweg is the third doctoral graduate from our institute to receive this honor in the past ten years. His dissertation, entitled “Numerical Investigations of Reactive Transport Processes during the Storage of Hydrogen in the Porous Subsurface,” was defended with highest distinction (summa cum laude) in March 2024.
