Drilling and Production

The Institute of Petroleum Engineering (ITE) of Clausthal University of Technology (TUC) has been working on various topics of drilling and production technology since its establishment in 1943. The independent department “Drilling and Production” has its focus in the areas of drilling technology, well integrity, medium degradation and stimulation, as well as production optimization. One of the department’s most distinguished facilities is the OCTG (oil country tubular goods) testing center in which OCTG pipes can be subjected to a number of loads. The capabilities of the OCTG testing center are almost unmatched in the world. Therefore, the ITE is an important certified and independent partner to the industry in qualifying OCTG pipes according to API and ISO standards. At the same time, the expertise and technical equipment of the ITE allow fundamental research and development on OCTG pipes and in particular their connections.

In compliance with the German energy transformation the ITE and the department have intensified their research and development efforts in the area of geothermal energy in the past 10 years. Projects addressing essential problems both while drilling the geothermal wells and during the production phase aim to reduce geothermal energy’s cost so that it will contribute substantially to Germany’s future energy supply. Another ongoing focus is automation in the area of drilling and production technology where the intelligent use of large amounts of data are just as important as process simulation. In this context there is a close and important relationship with the Drilling Simulator Celle, a research facility of Clausthal University of Technology at the location of the German oil service industry.
